If you are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada, age 18 or over, you can sponsor certain family members to become Canadian permanent residents. If you become a permanent resident, you can live, study and work in Canada. If you sponsor a relative to come to Canada as a permanent resident, you are responsible for supporting your relative financially when he or she arrives.
Your spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner.
Your dependent child.
Your father, mother, grandfather or grandmother – Additional conditions apply.
Your orphaned brother, sister, nephew, niece, grandson or granddaughter, who is under the age of 18, and not married or in a common-law relationship.
A child you plan to adopt (international adoption).
Prove that they will be able to financially support their family member and any dependent, if necessary.
Be 18 years of age or older.
Be a Canadian citizen, Registered Indian or permanent resident.
Be sponsoring a member of the family Class.
Enter into an agreement with the Government of Canada or Quebec, as well as the sponsored relative, where the sponsor will agree to support the family member for a certain amount of time. The sponsored relative must make an effort to support themselves, as well.
Either reside in Canada prove their intention to live in Canada when the sponsored relative arrives in Canada.
The sponsor is financially responsible for the person sponsored for three years after the sponsored person becomes a permanent resident.
Individuals who come to Canada as spouses are themselves barred from sponsoring a spouse in turn for 5 years after receiving Canadian permanent residence.
A two-year "legitimate relationship" regulation applies to spouses/partners who have been in a relationship for two years or less and who have no children in common at the time of application submission.
